Feb. 25, 2013 -- The global law firm Jones Day announced that Rachel Bloomekatz, formerly law clerk to U.S. Supreme Court Associate Justice Stephen Breyer, will join the Columbus Office's Issues & Appeals Practice this summer as an associate. She is the sixth clerk from the Court's 2011-2012 term to join the firm.
A graduate of the UCLA School of Law (JD, Order of the Coif, 2008), Ms. Bloomekatz worked on a U.S. Senate campaign after leaving the Court.
"We usually manage to recruit a goodly number of clerks, but we're thrilled this year to have attracted so many of these outstanding young appellate lawyers," said Glen Nager, the Washington-based partner who chairs Jones Day's Issues & Appeals Practice. "It is an ongoing imperative in our Issues & Appeals practice, and throughout the Firm, to recruit and foster talent in these areas and give our young lawyers significant work to do. We believe it also has something to do with our strategy of deploying appellate lawyers outside of, as well as within, the Beltway in all applicable matters, at early stages of litigation. We look forward to their arrival."
"We're very pleased that Rachel has chosen to participate in the unique powerhouse appeals practice that we are building here," said Columbus Office partner-in-charge Liza Kessler. "She joins another former Supreme Court clerk, Eric Murphy, and a partner, Chad Readler, who's arguing a case at the Court today. These are exciting times."
The other five former clerks joined Jones Day last Fall. Their office locations, the Justices they clerked for, and their law schools are as follows:
- Brian C. Lea, Atlanta, Justice Clarence Thomas, University of Georgia School of Law
- Jeffrey R. Johnson, Washington, Justice Elena Kagan, Harvard Law School
- Anthony Dick, Washington, Justice Samuel A. Alito, Jr., Stanford Law School
- Christopher DiPompeo, Washington, Chief Justice John G. Roberts, Jr., University of Pennsylvania Law School
- Ryan D. Newman, Washington, Justice Samuel A. Alito, Jr., University of Texas School of Law
