LOS ANGELES – JD Harriman has joined Arent Fox’s Los Angeles office as a partner in the firm’s growing Intellectual Property practice. With more than 20 years of experience in patent prosecution, intellectual property litigation and counseling, Mr. Harriman is on the leading edge of recent changes in patent legislation. His focus includes post-grant proceedings including offensive and defensive ex parte reexamination practice, as well as post-grant review and inter partes review from the standpoint of both the challenger and the patent holder.
“In today’s economy, the critical element in a company’s DNA is its intellectual property. Companies require the best attorneys to help them protect this valuable asset,” said Robert C. O’Brien, California managing partner for Arent Fox. “We are fortunate to add JD to our talented California intellectual property group, giving clients from large multinationals to emerging growth companies exceptional IP counseling and litigation services.”
Mr. Harriman’s clients come from a diverse range of industries, which has led him to develop extensive technical knowledge of circuit design, software patents, Internet patents, business method patents, electronic routing devices, storage devices, telecommunications, computer architecture, special effects, computer animation, encryption, data compression, graphical user interfaces, biomechanical devices, medical devices, and more. He has lectured on intellectual property matters on four continents. Prior to joining the firm, he was a partner in DLA Piper’s Los Angeles office.
“Post-grant patent proceedings are the new frontier in the patent sector, so JD’s knowledge in this area will be an invaluable resource for our clients, offering them a more cost effective solution to patent challenges,” said Craig Gelfound, head of Arent Fox’s Intellectual Property practice in Los Angeles. “He also brings exceptional trial skills to the practice, coupled with longstanding experience in pre-suit investigations and advising clients in due diligence proceedings, portfolio acquisitions, strategic licensing and litigation, making him a great addition to our IP team.”
Mr. Harriman graduated from the University of Southern California Gould School of Law in 1984 and has a bachelor of science degree from The Ohio State University. He resides in Beverly Hills.
