MENLO PARK, CALIF., November 5, 2013 — Goodwin Procter LLP, a national Am Law 50 firm, announced today that Daniel J. Burns has joined the firm’s Silicon Valley office as a partner in its Patent Prosecution & Counseling Practice. He comes to Goodwin from Fish & Richardson P.C. where he was a partner in the Silicon Valley office.
At Goodwin, Burns will focus on domestic and international patent prosecution in areas including software, Internet, information retrieval, cloud computing, renewable energy, machine learning, image processing, 3-D graphics, web technologies and bioinformatics, among others. He also works with client engineering teams and in-house counsel to identify and develop new inventions, advises on intellectual property agreements, prepares clients for licensing negotiations and conducts open source investigations.

Prior to his legal career, Burns was a software engineer and manager for 10 years and worked as an engineer in the Space Physics Group at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California. He received his J.D. from Loyola Law School, his M.S. in computer science from California State University and his B.S. in computer science from Old Dominion University. He is admitted to practice in California as well as before the U.S. court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit and the U.S. Patent and Trademark office.
