Garden City, NY (January 6, 2014) – Honorable Judge David J. Ayres, who has served for nearly a decade as a Nassau County judge and as an acting justice of the Nassau County Supreme Court, has been appointed Managing Partner at Barket Marion Epstein & Kearon, LLP, a New York-based white collar, criminal defense and civil litigation firm.
“As one of the most respected members of the Long Island judiciary, we are proud that Judge Ayres chose our firm for his new professional home and we look forward to him taking the helm as Managing Partner. He will oversee the firm’s day-to-day operations and he will represent clients in state and federal court,” said Bruce Barket, founding partner at Barket Marion Epstein & Kearon, LLP. “He will also play an integral role in our long-term strategic planning and business development.”
“The County Court will miss Judge Ayres,” said Hon. William Donnino, Former Supervising Judge, Nassau County Court. “He brought a high level of intelligence, dedication and integrity to the bench, and was one of the most productive judges in the court.”
"Judge Ayres will be missed on the bench where he served with distinction, said Stephen P. Scaring, a prominent criminal defense attorney in Garden City. “His experience on the bench, coupled with his talent and dedication, will make him an excellent attorney. I look forward to working with him as a member of the bar."
Judge Ayres began his legal career as a trial attorney in the Nassau County District Attorney's Office and then spent six years as Principal Law Clerk to a Nassau County Court Judge. In 2003, he was elected to the County Court, and at 37 years old, was the youngest person to be elected to a countywide judgeship in Nassau County. During his tenure in Criminal Term, he has presided over more than 100 felony criminal jury trials and thousands of pre-trial proceedings.
Judge Ayres also spent time as an Acting Family Court Judge where he presided over matrimonial and civil matters in Supreme Court. He also presided over the Mental Hygiene Court and the Integrated Domestic Violence Court and was selected to help establish and preside over the first Sex Offense court created in New York State.
A graduate of Adelphi University and Hofstra School of Law, he is a lifelong resident of Nassau County and a longstanding volunteer soccer, baseball and basketball coach.
Judge Ayres is based in the firm’s Garden City office at 666 Old Country Road.
