Former Congressman Joins Mayer Brown

Washington, DC, 1 May 2014 – Mayer Brown, a leading global law firm, announced today that former US Representative Toby Moffett has joined the firm in Washington DC as a senior advisor in its Government & Global Trade group. Also joining Mayer Brown alongside Mr. Moffett are two experienced lobbyists from The Moffett Group, government affairs advisor Mickey Leibner and government affairs specialist Mike Kelley.

Mr. Moffett, who served four terms in the US House of Representatives representing Connecticut’s Sixth Congressional District, will co-lead the firm’s US legislative affairs activities with another former US congressman, David McIntosh, who represented Indiana’s Second District in the House of Representatives and also served in both the Reagan and Bush administrations. Mr. McIntosh has been a partner at Mayer Brown since 2001.

Mr. Moffett will also focus his energies on Mayer Brown’s activities in Africa. He and his firm have extensive experience there over the past two decades, beginning in the early 1990s with a successful effort on behalf of the President of Angola to restore full diplomatic relations with the US. The Moffett Group has represented the Government of Morocco for more than a decade and has

represented the governments of Kenya, Malawi, the Republic of the Congo, the Governor of the Central Bank of Somalia, and the President of the Somali state of Puntland.

“My decision to join Mayer Brown stemmed from my experiences in working with the firm on important projects during the past 20 years, as well as my desire to become part of a larger global practice,” said Mr. Moffett. “It’s very exciting to think about what we will do together.”

Elsewhere in Africa, Mr. Moffett has also represented Virgin Nigeria Airways, the South African Wine Industry Trust (SAWIT), the African Virtual University, and, most recently, TP Mazembe, the highly successful soccer club of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).

In the US, Mr. Moffett and his team have spent years representing Caithness Energy, the developers of the country’s largest wind project, and a number of other developers of wind, solar, and hydropower assets.

For five years, Mr. Moffett was one of the leaders of the coalition that helped win passage of the James L. Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act that brought health benefits to workers from the Ground Zero site and indemnity to the New York contractors who did heroic work immediately following the tragedy.
