Miller & Chevalier Welcomes Alejandra Montenegro Almonte

Washington, D.C., August 22, 2016 -- Miller & Chevalier Chartered today announced that Alejandra Montenegro Almonte joined as a Member in the firm's International department. She will practice in the areas of international corporate compliance, focusing on matters in Latin America and those involving the U.S. Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA), internal investigations, complex commercial litigation and risk management. Montenegro Almonte previously served as a Division General Counsel at gategroup, a global provider of products, services and solutions related to an airline and rail passenger’s onboard experience.

At gategroup, Montenegro Almonte oversaw and advised on all legal issues and business activities arising in North America and Latin America, including on commercial, litigation, transactional, regulatory, compliance and employment matters. A significant focus of her work across the U.S., Canada and seven Latin American countries was internal investigations and compliance matters. She was charged with developing a legal compliance program, including the creation of an anti-corruption system and sanction control system as part a top-down compliance structure, which included global business compliance committees. After a successful launch in North America, the program was rolled out globally, including in Latin America. Montenegro Almonte also represented gategroup in matters before the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC).

A native Nicaraguan, Montenegro Almonte grew up in New Orleans, Louisiana. She is Co-Founder and serves on the board of Lagniappe Education Foundation, a nonprofit founded as a result of Hurricane Katrina that grants scholarships to high school seniors pursuing higher education. She also sits on the Board of Directors of D.C. Law Students in Court.

A frequent speaker on compliance and litigation issues, Montenegro Almonte earned a J.D. from Harvard Law School and a B.A. from Columbia University. Prior to joining gategroup, she was a Litigation Associate at two Am Law 100 firms in Washington, D.C.
