NEW YORK, Sept. 6, 2016 – Kramer Levin Naftalis & Frankel LLP announced today that Jamie Kocis, James P. Power and Daniel Ross Berman have been elected partners of the firm. Ms. Kocis and Mr. Power were previously special counsel at the firm, and Mr. Berman was an associate.
“We are pleased to expand our partnership with these talented attorneys,” said Kramer Levin Managing Partner Paul S. Pearlman. “Today’s announcement is a testament to our commitment to organic, strategic growth and to fostering and recognizing personal growth.”
Jamie Kocis – Corporate, New York
Jamie Kocis represents issuers, underwriters, borrowers, lenders and service providers in structured finance transactions involving a variety of asset classes, including time-share loans, solar assets, structured settlements, lottery receivables, equipment leases, auto loans, collateralized debt obligations, commercial mortgage loans, marketplace lending, distressed assets, government contract receivables, student loans, and trademark and licensing rights. Ms. Kocis’ practice also involves counseling investment funds in their participation in tender option bond programs. She works with both lenders and underwriters in the emerging solar asset space, as well as other esoteric asset classes, as deal counsel for both warehouse securitization facilities and term securitizations. Her most notable work includes serving as deal counsel in the first-ever term securitization of solar loan assets, as well as the first-ever warehouse securitization of solar loan assets.
Ms. Kocis earned her B.S. from Binghamton University, State University of New York. She earned her J.D. from University of Miami School of Law, magna cum laude, where she was senior articles editor of the University of Miami Law Review and a member of the Order of the Coif. She is a member of the firm’s Women’s Initiatives Committee.
James P. Power – Land Use, New York
Jim Power represents private developers and cultural, educational and health care institutions in connection with New York City real estate development and land use issues. His work includes advising on zoning and municipal law issues and the land use and environmental review processes, as well as practicing before various New York City land use agencies. He also assists in the analysis and assemblage of development sites, including drafting and negotiating zoning lot and development rights agreements. His most notable recent work includes representing a major New York City developer in obtaining a text amendment and City Planning Commission special permits for a new residential development in the West Clinton area, and leading the project team through difficult negotiations with the community board, the City Planning Commission and the City Council.
Mr. Power earned his B.A from Williams College and his J.D. from New York University School of Law. Prior to law school, he worked on housing, economic development and open-space issues and was a New York City Urban Fellow.
Daniel Ross Berman – Real Estate, New York
Daniel Berman represents investors, developers, operators and financial institutions in a range of real estate transactions, including acquisitions and dispositions, financings, and development of commercial and multifamily properties nationwide. Many of the transactions Mr. Berman handles involve complexities beyond “plain vanilla” real estate deals, including unconventional structures and distressed situations. For example, he represented a residential leasehold cooperative, which was facing an untenable increase in rent payments under its ground lease, in negotiating its acquisition of fee title to the land beneath its building, including the complex financing arrangements needed to complete the transaction. Mr. Berman has been recognized as a Rising Star by New York Super Lawyers since 2011.
Mr. Berman earned his B.A., with honors, from Brown University. He earned his J.D. from Columbia Law School, where he was a James Kent Scholar and Harlan Fiske Stone Scholar. He is a member of Kramer Levin’s Pro Bono Committee.
