Cozen O’Connor Attorney James Schultz to Serve in Trump Administration

Philadelphia, Pa. - January 23, 2017 — James D. Schultz, chair of Cozen O’Connor’s Government Law and Regulatory Affairs practice group, and former General Counsel of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania has been selected to serve as Associate White House Counsel and Special Assistant to the President in the Trump administration. He will be joining the Office of White House Counsel, which advises the President, the Office of the President, and the White House staff on all legal issues.

An early supporter of President Trump, Schultz, a veteran of Pennsylvania politics, assisted on President Trump’s successful primary campaign effort in the Keystone State. Later, Schultz played a key role at the Republican National Convention, offering critical advice and assistance on floor operations as well as to the platform and rules committees. After the November election, Schultz was appointed as legal counsel to the President Elect's transition team.

At Cozen O’Connor, Schultz represented clients in litigation across a broad spectrum of highly regulated industries, including health care, insurance, energy, warehousing and logistics, and technology in state and federal court. In addition to his service as General Counsel to then-Governor Thomas W. Corbett, Schultz served as legal counsel and senior advisor to the first campaign of Congressman Patrick L. Meehan (R-PA 7th District) in 2010.  From 2005-2008, Schultz worked in the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania where he served as an aide to then-U.S. Attorney Meehan. In that role, he focused on Department of Justice public policy initiatives and was the liaison to federal, state, and local governments, law enforcement officials and agencies. And, in 2004, Schultz served as a regional field Director for then-President George W. Bush's re-election campaign.

Schultz is admitted to practice law in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, the Supreme Court of the United States, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit and the U.S. District Courts for the Eastern and Middle Districts of Pennsylvania and District of New Jersey. He earned his law degree from the Widener University School of Law, where he served as a law clerk for Chief Justice of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court Thomas G. Saylor. He earned his undergraduate degree from Temple University, where he was a member of the Temple Owls football team. Immediately following law school, Schultz served as a law clerk to the late Honorable Vincent A. Cirillo, President Judge of the Pennsylvania Superior Court.

Schultz is a native of Galloway Township, New Jersey where he attended Absegami High School.  He currently resides in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania with his wife Michelle and two children.
