(New York) February 1, 2018 — MoloLamken LLP, a premier national litigation boutique, announced today its commitment to support the American Bar Association’s Judicial Intern Opportunity Program for diverse students. The firm will sponsor a judicial intern in New York, in Washington, DC, and in Chicago – the cities in which the firm has offices. Firm lawyers will also interview student candidates for judicial internships and provide mentorship.
The Judicial Intern Opportunity Program (JIOP) is a major diversity initiative of the American Bar Association. It provides law students who are members of racial and ethnic minorities—and other groups traditionally underrepresented in the legal profession—the opportunity to serve as an intern with a judge in the summer following their first or second year of law school. The program, now in its eighteenth year, was founded in response to a study reporting that only 15% of judicial clerkships were held by minorities. JIOP also provides opportunities for students with disabilities, women, economically disadvantaged students, and those who identify as LGBT.
“The JIOP can make a real difference for students who might not otherwise have the opportunity to learn what goes on in a judge’s chambers. This initiative is a natural fit for us. All of our associates have done a judicial clerkship – so we know, first-hand, the importance of that experience for young lawyers,” said firm co-founder Jeffrey Lamken.
MoloLamken’s attorneys are looking forward to mentoring the law students. “Our associates have expressed a great deal of enthusiasm for becoming involved in this effort. I’m excited to lead it on behalf of the firm,” said partner Jessica Ortiz, who will oversee the program.
Firm co-founder Steven Molo noted, “Our firm is always working to enhance its diversity. We know that it makes us stronger. That’s true for the profession as a whole.”
