September 28, 2022 (San Francisco) – By focusing on the Voice of the Client (VoC) and bringing a tech startup approach to legal learning, newly launched Luminate+ (luminateplus.com) is attracting the biggest names in the legal industry to spearhead innovative programming and raise the bar in the professional development arena. Similar to top entertainment streaming services, Luminate+ is a video streaming platform for the legal community, serving up premium content that has already drawn the participation of more than 150 industry leaders, including Fortune 500 GCs, public company directors, top academics and renowned consultants (speaker roster available here).
Although the content is all CLE approved, Luminate+ is not just another CLE offering, according to Andrew Dick, founder & CEO of Luminate, LLC (formerly In-House Focus). “While Luminate+ is a full-fledged CLE solution, the CLE piece is just the kicker. CLE is just table stakes. We have a much loftier goal of being a guiding light for the profession by delivering valuable, engaging and hyper-relevant content that legal professionals need, want and would readily consume even if there were no CLE mandates,” says Andrew.
That mission has resonated with forward-thinking Am Law 100 law firms attuned to clients’ growing demand for relevant educational resources. Some have already pre-purchased hundreds of Luminate+ subscriptions to gift to their most valued clients.
The Voice of the Client
Luminate+ is the first learning platform that gives lawyers first-hand access to on-demand client insights and perspectives on the critical issues that challenge them today, such as digital transformation, legal tech and operations, ESG, ethics & AI, legal strategy, DE&I, cyber and data privacy. In doing so, Luminate+ is attracting high profile client-side speakers to its platform and giving the entire legal community a rare opportunity to hear directly from clients.
"Luminate+ delivers educational content that is lacking and sorely needed by both in-house lawyers and their outside firms. The legal profession is struggling to keep up with today’s pace of change and Luminate+ is stepping in to help legal professionals navigate that change. That’s why I was excited to host a series on the platform and invite fellow general counsel to join me for important conversations," says Damien Atkins, CLO of Aura (former GC of Hershey), who is hosting a Luminate+ series entitled The Purposeful Leader. The series explores leadership style and philosophy with leading general counsel including Rashida La Lande (GC, Kraft Heinz), Amy Tu (CLO, Tyson Foods), José Ramón González (CLO, Equitable) and Brandon Nelson (GC, JetBlue), among others.

Modern Approach to Streaming
With popular streaming apps like Netflix and Apple TV+ as its guidepost, the Luminate+ team endeavored to create the first modern day streaming service for the legal profession. Like most other streaming services, the content is served up as an original series allowing professionals to discover new series of interest and watch multiple episodes woven together by a common theme. Streaming platforms are ubiquitous for consuming entertainment content and consumers love it. Why not offer the same user experience for professional content?
Luminate+ launches with 9 original series, each with 6-12 episodes, including The GC Agenda (hosted by Susan Hackett, CEO of Legal Executive Leadership), Lawyering at Scale (hosted by Jae Um, Founder & Executive Director of Six Parsecs) and Institutionalizing Inclusion (hosted by Caren Ulrich Stacy, Founder & CEO of Diversity Lab). The next 5 series are already in production and will be released later in Q4 along with the Luminate+ mobile app that will be available in the App Store and Google Play.
Consistent with other popular streaming services, Luminate+ is a SaaS offering available as a monthly or annual subscription at a price point consistent with other streaming services. Individual subscriptions are as low as $12/month, and less for enterprise subscribers such as law firms and corporate legal departments.
Client Gifting Program
Keeping in mind that law firms are under increasing pressure to drive more value for clients, Luminate+ offers a gifting program whereby law firms can provide their clients with a gift subscription to Luminate+. In making a gift subscription, the law firm gets an exclusive branding opportunity on the Luminate+ platform to be recognized by the client as the gifting firm. In its 6-9
month roadmap, Luminate+ will begin rolling out additional features to further increase upside for the gifting firm, including the firm’s ability to deliver its own thought leadership content to clients directly through the platform, offering a highly attractive and exclusive channel for law firms to reach their clients.
Under the terms of the gifting program, law firms grant a gift license to the entire legal team at a given company/client, meaning it’s an exclusive arrangement. “Because legal departments can only receive a gift subscription from a single law firm, law firms are moving quickly to secure this opportunity for their highest value clients before another firm beats them to the punch,” says Andrew. “We already have Am Law 50 firms signing up and beginning to extend gift licenses to highly coveted clients.”
Luminate, LLC (formerly In-House Focus) is a Bay Area startup founded by legal tech entrepreneur Andrew Dick, a former Biglaw attorney (Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher and Morrison & Foerster) who has found innovative ways to propel the legal profession forward. After successfully exiting his first legal startup (Select Counsel) in 2018, he founded Luminate, a subscription streaming service and video production company that delivers cutting-edge legal content to legal professionals and the broader business community. The company is based just outside San Francisco in Sausalito, California.
