PHILADELPHIA — Jan. 6, 2025 BakerHostetler is proud to announce Daniel Goettle will serve as managing partner of the firm’s Philadelphia office, effective Jan. 1.

Goettle succeeded Joseph Lucci, whose leadership helped expand the office’s capabilities and presence within the region over the past decade.

“It has been an honor to lead the Philadelphia office, and I am thrilled to have Dan as my successor,” said Lucci. “He has been an exemplary colleague and leader within the firm, and I look forward to seeing him lead with the same integrity and dedication that he brings to his legal practice.”

Goettle served on BakerHostetler’s policy committee for six years and spearheaded the opening of the firm’s Wilmington, Delaware, office in 2019. In addition to his managing partner role in Philadelphia, Goettle will continue serving as head of the Wilmington office.

Over the course of his career, Goettle has demonstrated extensive prowess in patent litigation across various technical fields, including computer science and electrical and mechanical engineering. His practice spans representation in federal courts, before the United States International Trade Commission and in post-grant review proceedings before the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

Goettle began his career obtaining patents in technical fields, which led to a robust litigation practice centered on complex intellectual property matters. In addition to his work with the firm, Goettle has a strong commitment to legal education. He serves as an adjunct professor at Drexel University’s School of Law, where he’s taught since 2015, and previously taught at Villanova University’s Charles Widger School of Law.

“Over the past ten years, under Joe Lucci’s leadership, the Philadelphia office has expanded to provide a full suite of services to our clients, and I am tremendously grateful for his dedication to helping grow our presence in the region,” said Paul Schmidt, chairman of BakerHostetler. “I am also thrilled to welcome Dan Goettle to his new role as office managing partner. Dan is a fantastic lawyer, an outstanding colleague, and a talented attorney. Building on Joe’s foundation, he will continue to grow the firm’s impact in the region.”

A former U.S. Coast Guard officer and attorney, Goettle had 12 years of service that included arguing criminal courts martial appeals and negotiating treaties at two United Nations organizations, experiences that have contributed to his strategic approach to complex litigation.

Goettle earned his Master of Laws degree in trial advocacy from Temple University Beasley School of Law; his juris doctorate, with honors, from The George Washington University Law School; and his bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, with honors, from the United States Coast Guard Academy.

“I am delighted to take on the role of managing partner of our Philadelphia office and to have the opportunity to continue Joe’s efforts in the operational leadership of the firm,” said Goettle. “Our Philadelphia office is well positioned to serve the evolving needs of our clients and I look forward to building on Joe’s momentum in this important region.”

BakerHostetler’s Philadelphia office has a growing team of attorneys equipped to handle all aspects of litigation, from commercial and antitrust to class action and patent litigation, as well as transactional matters ranging from patent procurement and tax to data privacy and labor.
